Miss West Carolina Speaks to the Issue
she makes me proud to call myself a south carolinian. just think, she was chosen as the best teen representative sc had to offer. maybe we should start taking education in this state a little more seriously.
“A fifth of americans can’t locate the U.S. on a world map, why do you think this is?”
Some people out there in our nation don’t have maps….
I believe our education such as South Africa, The Iraq, and everywhere like Such As…
We should help…
The one fifth probably represented by the 40-50 state education rankings (bottom one fifth)
40 South Carolina
44 West Virginia
49 New Mexico
Don’t let the 40 ranking fool you. SC was 50th in SAT scores (49th in ACT scores, but there was no 50 as there was tie for 36th).
2006 Report Card on American Education
I think she should have answered, “Because many states in the South such as The South Carolina, The Mississippi, and The Georgia are not often exposed to maps such as after 1865.”
Never have the words “such as” meant so much.
I knew you’d have somthing to say about this one. Saw it on the news the other night and was so embarrassed for her, I couldn’t even laugh. Even AC Slater held his smile well. (Cuz he knew he didn’t make the best grades either.) She really does bring the point home well… education is important.
Hey, We cant all hail from the great state of Texas….
My thought is that maybe we should give the girl a break. I’m sure she will be re-living that moment for years to come. It’s lucky for us that our less than brilliant moments aren’t broadcast on national television.
OOOO OOOO, except for sam falling out of a limo on national tellie
yeah, i knew that was coming
OK so yesterday was EXCRUCIATINGLY frustrating day and all I saw on the news (over and over) was this story and the “I’m not gay!” senator who wanted another man to perform sex acts with him in an airport bathroom. So, I apologize for picking on the Confederate States of America education system (of which Texas is also a part). It was a cheap pick-me-up at the expense of others.
I did think of another answer that was not picking on any particular state. Though I am sure it is still inappropriate…but I think she could have still made the news this way…
“I’m not sure why 20% of Americans can’t find the U.S. on a world map. But, I suggest we ask all the illegal immigrants to do the same and then allow those who can to stay. Then we can deport the “Americans” who could not find their own country on a world map and see if they get a better education in some other part of the world. At least they would appreciate subjects like geography in a whole new way. It is creative solutions like these that we need to explore in order to provide a better future for our children.”
What gets me is that she had a speech coach. And, she obviously won 2 other pagents previously (Miss teen Lexington and Miss Teen SC). She has been practicing answering questions for quite a while now. And this is what she came up with? I don’t feel sorry for her. I feel more sorry for her speech coach.
And, THEN, did you see her try to redeem herself yesterday morning on one of the morning programs? It went something like: “I know where the United States is on a map. And, all my friends know where it is on a map. SO, I don’t know anyone that doesn’t know where it is. Maybe we should better educate people about where the United States is.” Is that much better? Seriously?
If you go on national television and either fall out of a limo or talk about how we should better educate s. africa and the iraq b/c 1/5 of americans dont know where their country is, then it’s free game for a good laugh.
and geography education in this state is awful. Bigbie thinks (well thought – he has been corrected) that brazil was in africa. …maybe i shouldnt have shared that….
